364 YEARS!
It was in 1659 that the first South African wine harvest took place!
The first wines were, at that time, imported from France, Spain and Germany on the initiative of Jan van Riebeeck. Of Dutch nationality, Jan van Riebeeck, then the first governor of the Cape, decided to establish a supply counter for ships making the trip between Europe and the Indies...
Production then grew in scale, expanding geographically with the arrival of more than 200 French Huguenots (revocation of the Edict of Nantes) to gain, over the years, its letters of nobility.
The region now has 18 wine routes!
