ANGLO AMERICAN & EDF RENEWABLES LAUNCH ENVUSA ENERGY JOINT VENTURE IN SOUTH AFRICA
Envusa Energy, co-owned by Anglo American and EDF Renewables, a subsidiary of EDF, will operate 600 GW within a few months and then, in a second phase, 1 GW of green energy projects in South Africa.
Envusa Energy's ambition is to generate 3 to 5 GW of renewable energy by 2030, or 13% of the capacity of Eskom, the local operator which currently sources from coal-fired power plants.
The partnership will also help Anglo American achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2040 and contribute to the decarbonisation of the country.
Bruno Bensasson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of EDF Renouvelables and Executive Director of the EDF Group in charge of the renewable energies division, adds: “The EDF Group is delighted to move forward with Anglo American in this ambitious partnership. We are happy to support industrial companies by providing them with competitive low-carbon electricity that replaces fossil fuels while responding to broader social and environmental issues. This project is also part of the South African government's ambition to accelerate the decarbonization of energy. This program is in line with the EDF Group's CAP 2030 strategy, which aims to double its net installed capacity for the production of renewable energies worldwide (hydroelectricity included) from 28 GW in 2015 to 60 GW in 2030”.
