VOLTALIA SIGNS A RENEWABLE ENERGY SUPPLY AGREEMENT WITH RBM RIO TINTO AND LAUNCHES THE CONSTRUCTION WORKS OF THE POWER PLANT
Voltalia, listed on Euronext Paris, is launching the first construction works of a 148 MW solar power plant, just a few months after the signing of a renewable energy supply agreement with Richards Bay Minerals (RBM).
The agreement will allow RBM to benefit 300 GW each year for 20 years. This is a first in South Africa, insofar as this plant is entirely dedicated to the activities of Rio Tinto.
Completed in 2024, the plant will therefore produce the equivalent of the electricity consumption of 425,000 inhabitants, thus avoiding more than 237,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to removing around 50,000 cars from circulation.
In addition to reducing RBM's environmental impact and reducing its energy bill, 700 full-time jobs will be created, including 53 permanent jobs. Voltalia is also associated with 3 local investors: Black Enterprise (41%), Black Women Enterprise (10%) and Bolobedu Community Trust (5%).
